On Creative Work
Genuine creative work starts before anything is made. It starts with curiosity about what something actually is and what it stands for. That curiosity has to come before the brief, before the concept, before any decision about how something should look or feel.
That is how I have always worked. Understanding a place or a context before proposing anything. Letting the research inform the direction rather than the other way around. Experimenting with materials and ideas before turning them into a system. The process of investigation and experimentation is not a phase that leads to the real work, to me it is the real work. What comes after is the translation of something understood into something that can be seen and felt.
Great creative work is also built on genuine exchange. Not committees and approvals, but thinking alongside the people you are working with and for, understanding what they are actually trying to achieve, and being invested enough to push back when something is not right. The work gets better when everyone involved is genuinely trying to get to the same vision.
And I believe in leaving things better than I found them. Not creating dependency but building capability. The most useful creative contribution is one that empowers the people around it to carry the work forward with confidence.
Biography
I studied Communication Design in Hamburg and left Germany shortly after graduating. First London, then São Paulo, where I spent a few years as a partner at Pharus Design working across branding, editorial and creative direction, while building a practice as a commissioned photographer working in advertising and brand imagery. Clients during that period included The Coca-Cola Company, Google, Nike Brasil, Natura Cosméticos and Itaú Unibanco among others.
Brazil changed how I think about making things. The creative mindset, the warmth, the willingness to experiment and feel shaped a way of working that has stayed with me since.
Back in Europe and based in Berlin, I worked as Creative Director and later Senior Creative Advisor at Whybrand, leading creative work for a range of industrial and technology companies, while continuing my photographic practice. Over time, my photography developed into a personal artistic practice exploring central questions around identity, belonging and the human experience. More at libotte.art
Working closely with complex organisations deepened my understanding of what creative work means beyond individual projects. How to hold a brand together across many stakeholders and many decisions. How to build trust over time. How to protect the quality of work while navigating different perspectives.
Together with my wife Adriana Takeuchi Libotte, I founded Space of Hearts, a living idea and physical space in Berlin exploring more human ways of being together. Through gatherings, conversations and creative experiences, we create spaces for connection, creativity and collective imagination. Built on the belief that warmth, care and genuine connection matter more than ever, Space of Hearts invites people to slow down, reconnect and remember that we were never meant to do this alone.

To deepen this perspective, I am currently participating in the Good Change Facilitator program, an intensive training exploring New Work principles, systemic organisational development, modern leadership, facilitation, inner work and regenerative business models.
Going independent clarified what I actually wanted to build. Not an agency, not a studio but a practice. A way of working that brings together creative direction, strategic thinking, storytelling, artistic exploration and human understanding.
